LED Christmas Lights

Light-Emitting Diodes
You're probably familiar with LED lights used as indicator lights on electronic devices and for high-power flashlights. An LED semiconductor encompasses less than 1mm of space and often has added optics to shape the radiation pattern and maximize reflection. Multi-colored LED Christmas lights produce monochromatic light and emit a specific light that remains vibrant through multiple uses. Colors emitted depend on the condition and composition of semi-conducting materials. White LED Christmas lights use a process that produces an electroluminescence from an ultraviolet light that is exposed to a phosphor, creating what the human eye distinguishes as white.

Lights of the Future
LED technology has been around since the 1960s; originally red, green, and blue were grouped together, and current to each was controlled to produce white light. The introduction of the blue indium chip with a phosphor coating in 1993 created the necessary wave shift needed to emit white light from a single diode, greatly reducing the cost of LED technology. Originally LED Christmas lights came only in red and white; today LED Christmas lights come in a variety of colors and shapes, with the ability to blink like incandescent lights.

The Benefits of LED Christmas Lights
LED Christmas lights do not have metallic filaments to burn out. Because bulbs are encased in a thick plastic rather than glass, bulbs are nearly indestructible under normal use. Wiring in LED Christmas lights is thicker than wires in C6, C7, and C9 lights, which reduces the possibilities of tangled wires.

LED Christmas lights will not fade, which is good news for those who leave their lights up indefinitely. Incandescent Christmas lights operate hotter, burn out faster, and can pose a fire hazard. LED Christmas lights are safer and cool to the touch; lights burn 50,000-200,000 hours, depending on the quality of the lights. Although the point of purchase investment is greater, LED lights can cost 1/10th the cost of operating incandescent Christmas lights.
